about

Welcome to our fifth album of original instrumental music.

This project grew from our desire to ‘pull back the curtains’ on our creative process. The music was developed during the course of a two-part residency at the Windsong Pavillion at Four Winds in Bermagui, NSW, Australia.

In January 2016, we spent a week working on a variety of compositional ideas with an open, collaborative approach, and exploring free improvisation as a trio; no rules, no discussion, and no idea where we’d end up. We toured in February and March playing these new pieces and allowing them to develop organically over time, rather than polishing them into a final, ‘fixed‘ version for performance. We also included a free improvisation in every concert. We then returned to Four Winds in April to record a snapshot of this music through a series of live performances and recording sessions.

We chose the title Iterations for this album as it encapsulates the process by which the record was written. Iterations also suggests the idea that a recording is just one version of a living composition, that can continue to evolve with every performance.

We hope you enjoy it.

The String Contingent Australia

The String Contingent have reached ‘the upper echelon of instrumental exploration, arrangement, composition and performance’ (Tony Hillier, Rhythms Magazine). Their music ‘brings to mind the bluegrass records of Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer … with elements of Bach, Kronos Quartet and sometimes a splash of Philip Glass ... they are incredibly skilled ...’ (Ulf Torstensson, Lira Magazine). ... more
