Swamp Song

from Talk by The String Contingent

/

about

While hiking through the forests of New Zealand, I was struck by the multiple perceptions of time on offer. In one way, the forest changes so slowly that we never notice, and yet by looking in more detail, one can see constant motion, decay, growth and change. A forest giant many hundreds of years old can stand unmoving for generations – and then, in only a few seconds, can come crashing down, and change a vast area of forest forever. For me, these different perspectives invite mental time travel: both into the future and the past, as time balloons and contracts around a single tree, and a whole forest.
